Anarcho-yuppie

I moved.

I thought it would be so easy, since I had no furniture and few posessions. I was moving out of a sublet in Fort Greene, where for 2 years I'd lived amidst another's (excessive) furniture. I wasn't burdened by such objects, not me, nope, I was travellin' light and better for it.

Then I discovered one thing harder than moving a bunch of furniture, is furnishing an apartment from the ground up. I didn't even have a bed, let alone a shelf or dresser. Living in a room full of someone else's crap, I'd longed for the opportunity to start from scratch, but it wasn't so fun after all. Shopping became a way of life, rife with stress and anxiety. I turned into a power-consuming yuppie overnight. When people asked what was new, I'd tell them about a new piece of furniture I'd bought, or wanted to buy. Disgusting, or worse - just plain banal.

And the money. I've never spent to much money in so short a time.

But now that's all in the past, my cash and I have parted ways, and I've moved on (and in). I love my apartment. I love my Gothic Cabinet Craft cubes. I love my craigslist used sofabed and coffee table.

Speaking of which, I've become a craigslist addict. The furniture listing pictures offer a rare and fascinating glimpse into the private lives of New Yorkers. Some vignettes look nice, some look awful, many look simply...alien. Certain photos have made me gasp aloud. Horrifying, but exciting - and I've come to crave more. I've never understood why some people love horror movies, but this must be similar. Now I comb through the listings for the sheer titillation, even while my apartment is full.

Comments:

Just found your blog/site today. Glad you are still with us. Wish you were still doing the Adventures in Santa Cruz. What in heck are you doing on the East Coast? Don't you know that they have the ocean on the wrong side out there?

There's a Nina's Adventures in Santa Cruz (12-9-1994) called "Scowl, America" that I love. Is this available online anywhere? Do you have a print of that for sale?

Your remarks about furniture and shopping remind me of Ed Norton in Fight Club getting all wound up in his Ikea coordinates.
