Saw the Sitayana at Two Boots and was totally blown away, wanted to meet you, but had to leave early. People in the West are barely familiar with the Ramayana, much less the heartwrenching ending, and you really seemed to have grasped the essence of the episode on some gut level. Still trying to get my mind around the meaning of Rama’s ultimate renunciation of Sita 4,000 years later, but the world around the Avatars, I suppose, is always quite Einsteinian ,and we aren’t meant to. Can't wait to see the entire film.
When Bhau Kalchuri (one of Meher Baba’s disciples, and quite a pundit in his own right) was in Jehangir Hospital in Pune, recuperating from a triple-bypass operation, I read the Ramayana out to him in English. Reading the final chapter was one of the most moving and profound experiences of my life.
Anyway, if you’re still in New York, Saturday, July 30, 2005, Bhau will be giving on program on his ghazals (he’s also a poet) at Sufi Books (227 West Broadway near North Moore) at 4:00 p.m. . (Details http://www.meherbabahouse.org/comboard.html). Admission’s free.
Ps. Sorry to use up your bandwidth. Blame it on the caffeine.
